November is National Adoption Month! Throughout the month I'll feature famous folk who have been adopted!  

Culled mostly from Wikipedia: Melissa Gilbert was born in Los Angeles on May 4, 1964 David Darlington and Kathy Wood, and was put up for adoption immediately after her birth. She was adopted one day later by actor and comedian Paul Gilbert, whose real name was Ed MacMahon (can you imagine...) and Barbara Crane, whose father creates The Honeymooners.  The couple later adopted a son, Jonathan, who co-starred on Little House on the Prairie.  They had biological daughter Sara Rebecca Abeles (the actress known professionally as Sara Gilbert of "Rosanne" fame  in 1975.

Melissa is known for her turbulent run for president of the Screen Actors Guild against Valerie Harper in 2001 and mostly known for her childhood role as Laura Ingells Wilder in the "Little House on the Prairie" series from 1973 - 1984, a wholesome family series where each week, to paraphrase "WKRP" someone either died in a fire or of a horrible disease...

Holy Moses! Today's National Adoption Spotlight!

November is National Adoption Month! Throughout the month I'll feature famous folk who have been adopted!  I got some grief for featuring a fictious character yesterday, so from now on - no more fictitious characters! Today’s spotlight: MOSES!

From Wikipedia: Moses' Hebrew mother hid him when the Pharaoh ordered all newborn Hebrew boys to be killed because of a prophecy of a messianic deliverer among the Hebrew slaves. He was put in a basket and floated down the Nile. The Pharaoh's sister found the basket and adopted the child who grew up with the Egyptian royal family to become Charlton Heston.

The Most Famous Adoptee of All! National Adoption Month Spotlight on ...

November is National Adoption Month! Throughout the month I'll feature famous folk who have been adopted!  Today, in honor of my Fiftieth Birthday - the most famous adoptee of all!

Born Kal-el on the planet Krypton, he was rocketed to earth by his birth parents, Jor-el and Lara just before Krypton exploded into radioactive rubble.

An election day National Adoption Day spotlight: 2 Presidents!

November is National Adoption Month! Throughout the month I'll feature famous folk who have been adopted! Check the Abby’s Road Facebook page for more adoptees – this blog will host some of the more interesting and famous!

                   

In honor of election day, our spotlight is on two Presidents of the United States from both sides of the aisle (in the interest of equal time…) the Honorable Gerald Ford and the Honorable Bill Clinton!

These two US Presidents are listed as being adopted. This is incorrect – neither were formally or legally adopted by their step-fathers, but each assumed their names.

Gerald Ford, the 38^th President of the United States was born Leslie Lynch King, Jr., on July 14, 1913 in Omaha, Nebraska. His parents separated sixteen days after his birth. His mother married Gerald Rudolff Ford on February 1, 1916.  They then called her son Gerald Rudolff Ford, Jr. The future president was never formally adopted, and he did not legally change his name until December 3, 1935.
Bill Clinton, the 42^nd President of the United States was born William Jefferson Blythe III on August 19, 1946 in Hope, Arkansas. His father died in an automobile accident three months before Bill was born. His mother later married Roger Clinton. Although he assumed use of his stepfather's surname, it was not until Billy (as he was known then) turned fifteen that he formally adopted the surname Clinton as a gesture toward his stepfather.

National Adoption Month: Spolight on Nelson Mandela

Today’s spotlight is on Nelson Mandela!

  

When Mandela was 9 years old, his father died of lung disease. Mandela was adopted by Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo, the acting regent of the Thembu people.  He became the first black president of South Africa in 1994, serving until 1999. A symbol of global peacemaking, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
